Couples Getaway to Greensboro

Just one hour and fifteen minutes from Raleigh lies the vibrant city of Greensboro. This is the perfect city for a weekend away, and truly is a playground for adults and children alike (though we went sans kiddos this trip). With over 500 restaurants, 88 accommodations to choose from, and attractions for all ages, Greensboro has something for everyone.

Greensboro has deep roots in the Civil Rights Movement, and here you can visit many places that you read about in history books. After stepping back in time, appreciate the city and its significance, as well as how much it has grown.

Entertainment awaits you on every corner. There are many street festivals with local vendors happening throughout the year, we visited during the North Carolina Folk Festival which was a lot of fun. The Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts also has many amazing performers visiting every week – grab your tickets when planning your trip!

All of this mixed in with breweries and local rooftop bars makes Greensboro an excellent city that should be added to your bucket list!

I have compiled a list of the three A’s: Accommodations, Adventures, and Appetite!  If you have any questions about Greensboro or our trip please shoot me an email!

Accommodations

Named after short story writer and Greensboro native, the O. Henry Hotel is just a short drive from downtown Greensboro. Upon entering, you feel as if you have stepped back to a time when staying at a hotel was a luxury, and they treat you as such. The staff is incredibly attentive and the oversized guest rooms and soaking tub make you never want to leave!

My favorite feature of this hotel was afternoon tea. This was something I have never seen in my travels and have now incorporated it as a tradition with my children. Guests are dressed up and classical music fills the air, while you delight in hot tea and savory snacks.

I would highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Greensboro, we had an amazing time and look forward to returning again!

Adventures

International Civil Rights Center & Museum – This is a must visit when in Greensboro. The museum is home to the Woolworth’s, the site of a non-violent protest in the civil rights movement. The four students from NC A&T started sit-ins and sparked a movement across the country. This museum has the Woolworth’s counter in tact so you can actually stand where they did and feel the weight of their movement. Take a tour of history as you walk through the museum, I highly recommend.

Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts – From Broadway shows to comedians and everything in between, the Tanger Center is centrally located downtown and should be included in your trip. We planned our whole weekend around seeing Nate Bargatze (one of my favorite comedians – look him up!). The facilities were clean and the staff was great. We loved our date night here!

Greensboro Science Center – The Greensboro Science Center has it all, literally! Here you will find an aquarium, museum, zoo, and a thrilling treetop adventure park! Our morning started at SkyWild where we spent two hours zipping and climbing through the treetop adventure park. There are three skill levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) spread out among 7 courses. This was incredibly fun, and I was able to complete 6 out of the 7. The 7th is definitely the hardest, and I have no regrets (haha). Dan did complete all 7 (wahoo!). One of the zip lines takes you past the tiger enclosure (gasp). The staff here was incredibly encouraging and really added to the course.

After SkyWild, we walked around the outdoor zoo. I cannot wait to go back and share this amazing center with my children. The Greensboro Science Center did an amazing job of making this an informational and educational experience for all visitors, with an animal care center that has viewing windows of radiology, surgery, food prep, etc… This entire area was well planned and thought out for all guests, and I was very impressed. Indoors will take you through the aquarium where you can meet penguins, otters, and other marine life. There is also a wonderful interactive dinosaur exhibit that is very informative and quite fun. I would definitely stop by here on your visit to Greensboro!

Appetite

Print Works Bistro – Located in Proximity Hotel (sister hotel to O. Henry), Print Works Bistro offers fine dining with extraordinary flavor. This French-style cuisine is locally sourced and my meal was delicious! This is an excellent dining option for those looking for an upscale experience. Candlelight and dim lighting made it very romantic (and we also saw some families dining as well – children are welcome!).

Green Valley Grill – Located at the O. Henry Hotel is this European style fare in a large courtyard setting. The outdoor terrace will make you feel as though you have walked into the European countryside. The food will only enhance that feeling, each bite better than the last! We loved our brunch here, and I would definitely stop for a meal when in the area.

Joymonger’s Brewing Company – A short walk from downtown you can find this indoor/outdoor small batch brewery. The beer and music here were great!

O. Henry Tea Time – Afternoon tea is a tradition here at the O. Henry hotel and as I mentioned before, it is worth stopping in Greensboro just for this fun afternoon! Sipping tea with beautiful music and afternoon tea treats will remind you to slow down and enjoy the moment.

Crafted The Art of the Taco – Downtown at Crafted you will find street food reimagined. With innovative cocktails and a new spin on tacos, you can’t go wrong from this menu!

  1. I’ve heard of Greensboro before, but I’ve never been. I’ve only been to a few places in NC, and always when we go to the mountains. Having a weekend without the kids sounds nice no matter where you go! We usually travel with the kids, though, so it’s great that they have attractions for everyone.
